What is a clinical trial?
Clinical trials are research studies performed in human study participants aimed at acquiring valuable data to support the claim of safety and effectiveness of the treatment to humans before market approval of a new or existing treatment.
What are the benefits of participating in a clinical trial?
While clinical trial participants cannot be assured of treatment or cure, there are other benefits associated with participating:
Clinical trial participants have the privilege of gaining access to free or low cost treatment and medications for a disease that is not yet available on the market.
By contributing to medical research, clinical trial participants help advance medicine by providing valuable data for researchers to use to help come up with the treatment.
Clinical trial participants often receive compensation for their time and participation in research.
As part of the clinical research procedures, participants receive diagnostic tests and labs at no cost and more frequent medical care and check-ups.
Through clinical trials, participants gain new knowledge about their condition.
One may ask, is it safe to participate in clinical trials?
Clinical trials are basically an environment where medical treatments and or procedures that have not yet been approved to be marketed are tested before being made available to the general public. Approved medical treatments and or procedures have risks associated with them and so are clinical trials. However, the risks involved in clinical trials are higher because of the unknowns that need to be researched upon. This is why participants are closely monitored throughout the trail and followed post trial by a board-certified medical doctor to ensure participant safety.
You might be asking yourself, should you participate in clinical trials?
Clinical Research is necessary to help acquire the necessary information required to be provided to regulatory agencies in order to prove safety and effectiveness of the treatment in order for it to be approved for use in the general public. By participating in clinical trials you are essentially helping others by helping the researchers come up with prevention, diagnosis, treatment or cure for a new treatment or better existing treatment.
How can one join a clinical trial?
Ask yourself; is there a treatment on the market that could benefit you currently?
If the answer is yes, talk to your doctor about the available treatments and see what would work for you.
If the answer is no, look for options from the available clinical trials that would benefit you.
Review eligibility criteria and the risks involved and discuss with your doctor.
Contact the clinical trial site or organizers.
Discuss your interest and concerns if any with the medical doctor overseeing the trial.
Learn about informed consent and make a decision whether or not you would like to participate.
